Osborne Photo Index By Site Name


Since there are about 1000 sites, a single page for one index would take an inordinate amount of time to load. The list is therefore segmented into many pages.

Pick a letter out of this list to see all the sites whose names start with that letter.

Each page has a table of sites, where each row refers to a specific site, and each column presents a specific type of data about that site and its images.

The following table describes each of the columns and their sometimes cryptic contents.

Description of the field
Notes about the field
Site Name The name of the site, as it appears within the holdings. In many cases, the name has changed since the photos were first taken. Great effort has been taken to use the old names. This is because it is an integral part of the name of the holding, and it provides a way to reference the actual photos to each of the respective archives.
Forest The forest or agency under which the image was found. Forest and management areas have long since changed boundaries and names. Be aware that the names are as close as possible to what existed in 1940.
Index The number assigned by the original holders of the pictures. Each sequence refers to a particular sub-grouping, like a forest or other management unit. Usually a number between 1 and 100 with occasional .1 and .5's to indicate post insertion into the collection.
Osborne CD The CD on which the site is available. Because of the sheer volume of images, maps, and enclosing web pages, the whole was segmented into three groups. Hence the existence of 3 CDs: WestOR, EastOR and WA. Note: all of the Umatilla N.F. is in the EastOR CD, even the portion which extends into Washington.
County The county in which the site sits. This data was derived from the USGS GNIS data. In some cases, the presented location varies from the USGS data and the corresponding county name may be incorrect. If it is incorrect, try looking in the adjacent county.
State The two- letter abbreviation for the state: California, Idaho, Oregon, or Washington There are very few sites which are in California and Idaho. All of them are on either of the Oregon CDs.
Latitude The latitude of the location, resolved by interaction with the ESRI ARCView USGS Map server. There may be localized error due to error in the ESRI data, the underlying map, or ambiguity of the exact location. However, the value will reference the map accurately.
Longitude The longitude of the location, resolved by interaction with the ESRI ARCView USGS Map server. The negative numbers indicate that it is west of the standard meridian. There may be localized error due to error in the ESRI data, the underlying map, or ambiguity of the exact location. However, the value will reference the map accurately.
Elev The elevation from GNIS. GNIS = Geographic Name Information Search.
Township,
Range,
Section,
Meridian
United States Public Land Survey system.
The "legal" location, described in terms of "section", "township" and "range". Each section is one square mile, each township is 36 square miles, six-by-six sections. There are four meridians used in this set, Willamette (WM), Boise (BM), Humbolt (HM) and Mt. Diablo (MDM).
The section, township and range at which the site can be found. Old and new maps, and ownership and legal documentation use this location addressing system. It represents a way to locate the site within one square mile. This data was derived from old and new forest maps, USGS maps, and the ESRI ARCView map server. In some cases, the presented location varies from the actual location. If it is incorrect, try looking in adjacent sections.
Wilderness The name of the wilderness or park in which the site exists. As of 1999.
Elevation+
Tower+
Camera

Data about the site's elevation, tower height, and the camera's additional height found on each image. If visible on the photograph, such elevation data is provided. Otherwise, sections of this data may be omitted if illegible on the original photo.
